How did you get into pickleball?

Post by Andrew Lenz » Wed Feb 20, 2019 10:36 am

So, how did you discover this great game of pickleball?

For me, my wife was looking for a way for me to get more exercise. "Isn't pickleball that geriatric game?" A friend of ours (John P.) was playing regularly. We arranged a time during club play. I thought, "If there aren't enough players and the game is too slow, I just won't go again."

Boy, was I wrong!

It was late January 2017 and, apparently, it was the first nice winter day in a while. About 50 players showed up! John took me through the basic rules and got me started. And the game was not slow. You had to have quick reactions and it was challenging. I was hooked! From there on out, it was once or twice a week . . . though I think my record is 6 times in 8 days.

What's your story?

Andrew

For Me, it was a friend of mine that "dragged" to a court over at Mike Fox. A guy named Jerry Louis said welcome to the wonderful world of pickleball and got me started. I use to play a LOT of racquetball but the old knees just couldn't take it anymore. I missed the exercise and the competition. Pickleball was just the thing I was looking for. It wasn't long before I dove in with both feet and started playing 2-3 times a week. I have discovered that no matter where you go in the world there are friendly pickleball players. I was in an Ireland Pub one night, yes it really was in Ireland, and this couple came up to me and said they play pickleball all the time, I was wearing my Santa Cruz Pickleball Club (SCPC} hat. Before long I joined the steering committee and developed the SCPC website. Still love to play and hope to play for many more years. My grandson, who is 4, wants me to teach him how to play.

While walking by Willowbrook Park on my way to the gym, I would see all these people on the court playing some sort of game and calling out numbers, like 7-3-2. One time I went over to ask what was going on. A man named Ray told me it was pickleball and invited me to play. The rest is history.
